Research for A3

For this assignment I will demonstrate how different software applications can be used on the same product. Using Final Cut Pro 7 and Photoshop I will create a digital matte painting and composite it into a video image of a Southend skyline.

Scenario

The head of the visual effects company I work for has approached me to mock up some test footage for a science fiction feature they are bidding for. The film will feature a scene set in  a futuristic city that has been built on the remnants of an old town. Using a clean background plate I will create a new skyline and composite it into the new one. I must:

  1. Shoot 10 seconds of footage of a skyline.
  2. Create a new skyline as a digital image.
  3. Composite the two assets in FCP7.

Research

The first thing I needed to do before I started recording a video was to find where to record. Since I live in Southend, finding a place wasn’t difficult and so I went to the highest level of my accommodation halls and recorded a video of a skyline from there.

Video recorded, the next step was to create a new digital skyline in place of the current one in the video. Since it’s science fiction based, I felt that I needed to find some materials that are related to the theme, so I did. I found some pictures of clouds and stars but in the end, I came up with 2 pictures, one with clouds at night time, and one with I star in the center with some red clouds forming around it.

Clouds in night sky

I chose this picture of clouds in the night sky because I felt that this particular image looked really cool especially with the moon in the right hand corner of the image which really brings out the sense of the night sky.

For my second image, I chose a relatively similar picture of a red star surrounded by clouds in which I felt that it complimented the first image amazingly.

I took these two pictures and composited them together in Photoshop, making a really awesome piece of skyline.

(For finished product, see A3 Design)

After compositing the 2 pictures together to form the new skyline, I now had to put it in with the recording in Final Cut Pro 7, replacing the old skyline.

Research for A2

For this assignment I was tasked to produce product packing, face designs, and a product print advertisement for a type of soap. I had to revitalize an existing bottom ranged basic soap which had to include eco-friendly and natural ingredients that had to appeal to elderly people generally aged 50 and over. In order to build on my ideas, I had to do some research on existing brands of soap and the different types of soap.   Below are the following research materials:

Mr. Soap Brainstorm

Above is a visual brainstorm of the word ‘Soap’ and is the core basis of my research analysis. I began by coming up with a name for my brand of soap. Since I was aware that I couldn’t use an existing brand of soap that is used already in the real world, I came up with my own fictional supermarket name: ‘Bescos’. Before the re-marketing of the soap, the soap was appropriately named: “Besco’s Basic Soap”. After the reproduction of the soap, it was to be named “Besco’s Soap”. However, I felt that the renaming was a bit too simple and it felt as though it didn’t quite catch the consumers attention, and thus I made a final decision to re-brand the soap as “Mr.Soap”. I chose the name “Mr.Soap” because it felt consumer friendly and it’s a name that everyone could understand. It’s clear and to the point.

Regarding the design of the soap, it had to be a bar soap because as this was for elderly people, a bar soap was perfect for them since they would have a firm grip on the soap because this type of soap is a soap which isn’t slippery. The colour of the soap was to be white as it gives it a look of purity and cleanliness. As for the design of the packaging, it were to be a rectangular shape as it fits along with the description of a bar soap. The colours of the packaging had to be clear and simple, including colours such as white, light blue, and light green.

As for the soap’s properties, it is made with natural ingredients, specifically selected for people with extremely sensitive skin, which includes: Sodium Tallowate, Sodium Chloride, Gelatin, and Aqua. It has been dermatologically tested and contains no perfume.

Mr. Soap poster concept

The following above is the poster I designed, with ‘Mr Soap’ in bold capitals in order for the poster to grab the attention of and appeal to the audience. It also features an image of the actual product on the bottom right corner of the poster so that the audience knows what the product is. It has the slogan ‘The soap that brings joy to all the family’ positioned just under the title which makes people believe that everybody will like it. The word ‘NEW’ is printed in capitals inside a starred border arranged at the top right corner and notifies the audience that this is a new and improved product. The phrase ‘No perfume!’ is shown in a starred border on the right side next to the title to get a point through that the product has no chemicals that may cause harm to asthma sufferers. ‘Dermatologically tested’ under main title to signify that this product has been tested thoroughly and passes safety conditions. On the bottom right hand corner, there is a little label captioned ‘WHICH? Soap of the Year 2014’ so that the audience knows it’s a trusted product and that it’s a really good product, so much so that it has won an award.

Mr. Soap Face Design and Product Packaging

Here is the face design and product packaging concepts. In the front view there is the brand name shown on the top left corner with an image of the actual product shown on the bottom right corner. On the top right corner there is a starred banner with text “NEW” shown and an an arrow pointing at it saying “Green fill” which indicates that I want to fill the starred banner with a green background. There is an arrow pointing at the brand name and saying “Dark blue fill” in which my purpose was to change the font color to dark blue.

Character biography:

Dave has the power to change the world, the power to transcend through time and space, ruler of the universe. However, his nemesis brother Mike, thwarts his ways in becoming the world’s greatest hero. Since young, he and his brother were like best friends, they would do activities together and talk about girls they were interested in. That was until the day of the incident. From that moment on, they knew that they were meant to be arch-enemies from birth. On that day, both their parents passed away in a terrific car crash. 10 years on, the thought of his parent’s deaths still haunts him, even today. Dave has his mind set on traversing back in time in order to prevent his parent’s deaths, little does he know that doing so will destroy the space-time continuum, the curvature of time, and everything in between. Using his mighty powers, he creates a giant portal to travel back in time to the day of the incident. Before stepping into the mysterious portal, his brother Mike suddenly shows up. Mike tries to persuade Dave not to go back in time and tells him that if he does, he break the flow of time and essentially, create havoc in the Universe. Dave now has the decision whether to prevent the incident from happening and destroy the universe, or to live with the hard truth and save the world he lives in at the present.

Reflection and Analysis of Results:

My intention was to create a character that had a superpower – the power to transcend through space and time – and to show it in a way that the audience would instantly recognise. I wanted to create another character who is the main character’s brother, Mike, to stop Dave from doing something stupid and it had to look convincing and thus, I drew Mike in a hoodie, faceless, with just a pitch black darkness replacing his face to signify something so deluded and eye-catching such as the grim reaper. The main character had to feel really insecure, worried to his pants so much so that he has to understand the serious consequences of his actions or else he would wreck the world.

Based on the results collected, it seems that people described the image generally as negative with words such as: ‘dark’, ‘ghost’, ‘death’, ‘shadow’, ‘rebel’, ‘evil’, and ‘hidden’. Judging from the feedback, only 1 out of 12 votes said that the character was trustworthy. I think the sole reason for that is because the antagonist is wearing a hoodie, possibly representing a young teenager, and that is portraying negative feelings because of the fact that he is being stereotyped. 3 out of 12 votes said that the character was likeable. Perhaps most people thought that because the antagonist had no face, people would assume that he is an unlikeable character because we know nothing about him and we like knowing things about people. All of 12 votes indicated that the character was passive. That is indeed the case since the character is doing nothing, just standing there. 11 of 12 people thought that the character was troubled. Clearly the image represents an emotion that is not joyful which shows us that the character could possibly be troubled. 12 out of 12 votes said that the character was not aspirational, as he doesn’t look like he wants to achieve anything in general. From my point of view, I wanted Mike to look like he was about to stop Dave but it seems that I didn’t put it across clearly. Other comments included the words ‘Grim Reaper’, ‘Modern Death’, and ‘The man who lost everything’. I found this interesting especially the comment about the man who lost everything. It’s interesting to see how people perceive the image. Some people may perceive it as scary, creepy, and haunted, whilst others may perceive it as mysterious, confusing, and weird.

Planning:

During the process of this task, I felt that I planned this not as well as I hoped for. When the task was set, I did some work during class but I didn’t come home to continue working on it straight away. I left it almost to the last minute to complete it and I understand that it was the wrong thing to do and that when I am set a task, I am to continue with it straight away when I get home from class. I believe this is one of my flaws and it needs to be worked on. With enough organisation and motivation I believe I can tackle this problem and that I learn from my mistakes.

For this assignment I worked with a fellow classmate and assigned each other different rolls to do. I worked more on the story line and the character biography while my partner worked more on the design aspects of the task. Luckily my classmate lived in the flat next to mine so I decided to have a group meeting with him so that we can plan out what we were going to do for the task. I believe I communicated well with him and explained my intentions clearly.
